WILDLIFE

There are many people who don’t know why wildlife is important.  According to CONAF (Corporacion Nacional de Chile), the truth is that there are two main reasons to protect the wildlife.  First of all we find the ecological reason because animals help us to maintain the balance of nature, I mean that if animals disappear would be a large accumulation of organic matter that would include a huge amount of minerals that could not be used as plant nutrients. The second point is economic reason because wildlife gives us various products such as meat, fur, feathers, hides, eggs, manure or manure, among others. The wildlife as part of the landscape is important in the recreation of man and therefore their health and mental hygiene.

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Today is a special day because we are celebrating the anniversary of the first environmental movement created in 1970.
This group of people do not have a particular name but most of the people named them "hippies", "weirds" even "nerds". The funny thing is that they do not care about that, they just pay attention to one thing: Find the way to keep warming the world, and make proud the mother nature of her childrens.

We invite you to use the hashtag on twitter #HAPPYEARTHDAY and let us know what you are going to do to celebrate this important day. In my case, I'm going to visit the zoo with my little cousin.

Our first visit to Fundación Refugio Animal de Pradomar

As we said in the article “Fundación Refugio Animal de Pramdoar” in (date), we went to this foundation in April 14th, 2012 and we met with Gina and her dogs and cats.

All of the dogs that we saw (like Samba and Dumbo, the tow most big dogs of this foundation and which are showed in the picture on the right) have a sad story.                                                   .

For example, Dumbo (the brown one) was almost to be sacrificed by it owners because they moved to another place and for that, it was hard to take the dog to this part. Samba (the black one) had the same story, but this foundation rescued this dogs and now, they are safe.

Another thing that we noted was this foundation really needs help because the place where are the dogs is artisanal and, as we said before, Gina and her cousin are alone with this. Also, in this foundation there are 69 dogs and 5 cats which need basic things like food and vaccinations, and there are not enough resources to supply it.

For that reason, Animals' League is working to help this foundation and especially to these dogs

Animal Cruelty: Animal Abuse Facts and Statistics

"As humankind has progressed, there has been an increase in governance and rules and regulations of everyday life. These governance and rules rise from general disgust over happenings and concepts all over the world. One such rapidly growing concept is animal cruelty."

The idea of the author with this text is talk about animal abuse in the entertainment business; with this article, he shows studies and statistics about animal abuse, besides we can see some animal cruelty actions that are rejected by many animal protectors’ organizations and it mentioned places where animals are harmed, also, text says that there are countries which is banned or restricted the use of animals. Besides, author criticized specially entertainment’s industry and he talks various examples of violence and exploitation against animals in films and circuses.

Personally, I think that this text shows a reality of the animal abuse, in many cases, this tries to create conscience in people about animal cruelty in entertainment, for example, circuses and films, it mentions dates that reveal the bad conditions in some circuses. This information is very clear and we can help in many ways because in our city we can create a new thought in people over the animal abuse and how this suffer for entertain us.

Fundación Refugio Animal Pradomar

On Carrera 43 N° 5-33, in Altos de Pradomar, Puerto Colombia (Colombia) is located a foundation of animal shelter named “Fundación Refugio Animal de Pradomar”. This foundation was created by Gina Hernandez, a green person who is sensible to animal abuse.

Fundación Refugio Animal de Pradomar was created in August 1th, 2010 and basically, works to rescue, take care, vaccinate, help and give in adoptions animals of the Atlantico/Colombia (like dogs and cats) which were mistreated and abandoned by their owners or another people.

Although, as we can see in the pictures, Gina Hernandez and her cousin Gina Hernandez (the president and vice-president of Fundación Refugio Pradomar respectively) are the only ones who is collaborating with this foundation and who are supporting more of 60 dogs and 5 cats in Pradomar. So, they need whether people, foundations or companies which want to help her and this foundation.

For that reason, we will cooperate with Fundación Refugio Animal Pradomar to continue with the project of protect abandoned animals and give them good life conditions (that is our interest as social group). Moreover, our activities will persuade Barranquilleros (especially young people) to take care of animals, donate supplies like pet food or medicines and to adopt animals which are living in the foundation. But more important than that is to raise awareness about the importance of the animal care and how are significant the animals to the mankind and the nature.

A NEW OPORTUNITY: VILLA LORENA

Through all this time we have been showing you few international organizations which are against animal abuses and work to stop it. Today, we want to introduce you a national organization named “Villa Lorena”, this sanctuary is directed by Ana Julia Torres and it is situated in Cali. This place is a shelter for hundreds of animals rescued largely from drug traffickers and paramilitary lands, as well as from circuses.

The founder said that “Some of the cruelties I’ve seen make me ashamed to be a human being”, she is referring to all the damage that the rescued animals have been victims.
As Torres has made an excellent job, her work has been recognized internationally by international entities as “Care2 make the difference” and also by one of the most important newspapers in the world: The New York Times. The American newspaper published an article dedicated to her life and love for the animals, it was a complete report written by Simon Romero in March 30, 2010.

Pets are helpful to people's feelings

Sometimes we forget the benefits of take care of any pet. Also, many times we think that a pet is our responsibility, and we never have to be grateful with our pet. However the truth is that a pet also can care us, I mean animals help humans in so many ways, for example when a person is suffering a marital separation, many psychologists recommend adopt a pet like a dog or like a cat because animals are lovely ,and  they help us to express our feelings. The book “Therapy Dogs” by Kathy Diamond is an excellent aid to learn how a dog can be a therapy.  I want to invite you to love a dog, you can do the best for a puppy ,and the puppy can do the best for your quality of life.

LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATORY OPTIONS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE IN COLOMBIA

According to Sociedad protectora de animales, there are many ways to protect an animal. One way is demand animal laws and to avoid animal’s law's impunity. Therefore, we must know about what Colombian government is offering us to keep animal welfare.  So,  it is important be aware that The Colombian constitution does not recognize animal rights, however Law 84 of 1989 stipulated a statute to protect animals, with the exception of bullfighting and cock fights, which are considered to be part of the Culture of Colombia. Unfortunately, although Colombian constitution is against animal traffic ,many people practice this type of crime. In addition Colombia is one of the major sources and routes for animal trafficking in the world. There are numerous non-governmental organizations working in Colombia on behalf of animal rights, but it does not happen. So, I think we must help to stop not only animal abuse, also we must stop the human violence and the Colombian impunity because it is the only way to be helpful for our society.

Leaving Animals Out of the Cosmetics Picture. By: Abby Ellin

There are many ways in which human's behavior cause damage to an animals' life. Testing cosmetics and other products on animals is one of them. In order to fight against this problem, The New York Times published an article written by Abby Ellin in which she explain the importance of animal-free testing by toiletries and another cosmetic products. In her article, Ellin propose to follow and support the different organizations that have decided to stop the old and cruel practice of testing their cosmetic products on animals. Besides, she said that those companies run campaigns to promote the animal-free testing; one of the main ideas that those organizations (and the author) stand up for is to persuade more people to use (and more companies to produce) makeup and toiletries that have not been tested on rabbits, guinea pigs, mice or rats.
 Peta's campaing against Animal-tested cosmetics
After having read the article, we felt satisfied with the changes that some organizations have achieved in order to stop this type of animals abuse in which cosmetics or some other products are tested on homeless creatures. We are glad to know that important companies are turning green and they are changing their products’ ingredients and how they test it,

Is important to analyze and to find solutions because we cannot allow that those animals are traded as toys.
